Picking the Right Classes to Be College-Ready Part 1

One important reason to begin readying your child for college--years in advance of applying—is to ensure that s/he chooses the right courses along the way. Students must not only make sure that they are taking all the classes necessary to meet the requirements of most colleges, but be aware that admissions committees will be evaluating them based on the rigor of their course selections, as well. The best preparation for college is academically challenging yourself in high school.

Most colleges require the following:

  • 4 years of English

  • 4 years of math

  • 3-4 years of laboratory science classes

  • 2 years of social sciences

  • 2-4 years of foreign language

Our next post will feature information requirements for California’s public colleges--the UC and CSU systems.

Is your student taking the right high school courses?
