Founded in 1926, Sarah Lawrence is a co-ed, liberal arts college with 1,670 students.  Some interesting things about the way they serve up the college experience:

  1. DIY academics.  No majors. No general ed courses. Seriously.
     

  2. Up close and personal.  Most classes consist of a small seminar and biweekly one-on-one student/professor meetings.
     

  3. Research opps.  Students conduct independent research projects beginning freshman year.
     

  4. Test-optional. No need to submit SAT or ACT scores.
     

  5. Quiet, but close to everything.  Suburban location, 30 minutes from midtown Manhattan.
     

  6. Generous. They provide hefty sums of both need- and merit-based financial aid.
