Sports Management? There's a Program for That!
If you have a business-minded student who never met a ball he didn't like, he might want to look into majoring in sports management. There are programs at many colleges and universities across the country. You can jump start your search with these:
University of Massachusetts, Amherst
Ohio University in Athens
Syracuse University
University of Michigan
Tulane
NYU
University of Texas, Austin
University of Connecticut
University of Georgia
Elon
University of South Carolina
University of Miami
University of Delaware
Drexel
In choosing this path and selecting a school, keep the following in mind:
Location matters. Schools in close proximity to major sports teams--Boston, LA, NY, etc.--offer the best opportunities for internships. Schools with Division I teams also offer chances to gain hands-on experience.
Pay attention to the department that offers the program and check out the curriculum. Programs offered in the Kinesiology Department will have a different focus than those offered in the Business Department.
Be aware that both college programs and industry positions are extremely competitive. Students in this arena need to become able networkers.
Students should think twice about their commitment to this field as, post-college, a Sports Management degree may not translate well into other fields.
