How to Learn About Colleges When You Can't Leave Home
The coronavirus has thrown a wrench into the travel plans of students looking to go on college tours. But don’t despair. There are other ways to explore colleges. Here are a few you can do in your pajamas:
Take a virtual tour. You Visit, Campus Reel, and Campus Tours are among many resources designed for you to take an online stroll through schools of interest to you.In addition, check out college videos on YouTube and on many college websites.
Attend virtual college fairs. Virtual College Exploration Week and The Big Virtual are two to start with, and we wouldn’t be surprised if some of the major in-person national fairs find ways to go online this year, as well.
Reach out to people in the know. Do you have any connection to students who attend/attended a college you’re interested in—maybe family friends or students your counselor can introduce you to? College social media groups may help you get in touch with current students and alumni and will give you a glimpse into the school’s culture.
Check out Google Earth. This is a great way to get an idea of a college’s location and what surrounds the school.
Contact admissions. Admissions officers can answer your questions about a school. In addition, they may be able to set up a video chat with a faculty member or student who can offer their perspectives.
